When unclear expectations and blurred roles are taking over the workplace, employees tend to be overworked and invested in tasks that might be of little to no relevance to their position and expertise. If that resonates, then clear boundaries need to be set. When boundaries are set and clearly communicated, one ensures that they are not being exploited and that their efforts and energy are directed where they’re intended to be.
By not setting boundaries, one cannot tell that they have been crossed; therefore, complaints and resentment about unwanted tasks or roles will not be met with a positive attitude. Boundaries in a workplace also delineate who you like to associate with and how you like to associate with them. Healthy and clear boundaries support your mental health by reducing stress and minimizing the risk of burnout and well as stress-related health issues. On the contrary, hazy boundaries, which may include compliance to others' needs and requests, can contribute to compassion fatigue or the emotional exhaustion that results from excessively taking care of other’s needs which can negatively influence personal relationships.
Therefore, setting clear boundaries in the workplace has several benefits that contribute to work/life satisfaction, productivity, healthy relationships and with colleagues, overall supportive work atmosphere, and mental and physical health.
